75th Anniversary of Vancouver Island's Largest Historic Earthquake

Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake Struck in 1946

On June 23, 1946, Canada's largest historic onshore earthquake occurred at 10:13 am Pacific time, with a magnitude of 7.3. The epicenter was located near the Courtenay area on Vancouver Island, making it the largest historic earthquake in the island's history.

Impact and Legacy

The earthquake caused significant damage throughout the region, including Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and Seattle. Buildings collapsed, bridges were destroyed, and landslides occurred. Despite the severe damage, there were no reported fatalities.

The anniversary of the earthquake serves as a reminder of the seismic activity in the region. Since 1918, six significant earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 5.3 to 7.2 have occurred in the area where the fault zone responsible for the 1946 earthquake is projected to be located.

This anniversary highlights the importance of earthquake preparedness and awareness, as the region remains at risk of future earthquakes.
